Grid Art Project

For my grid art project I really just wanted to do something simple, and the first thing that popped into my mind was a flower. I was originally going to use a photo I had taken myself on the Canon T3i, but when I put it into Photoshop and changed it to pixels it looked nothing like the original photo, and I really just didn't like it. So instead, I found a basic picture of a rose and used it. It looked a lot better in Photoshop and actually proved to be easier to make color wise since I used tissue paper. I had intended to use beads, but it would've taken a lot longer to put together so I decided against it. The tissue paper was easy to work with, but I definitely wish it had a better variety of shades; that way, the final product would look a lot more like the Photoshopped image and resemble an actual rose more closely. Regardless, I did enjoy this project a lot, and it has made me want to create something else that is very similar.

Raul Cuero Interview- Sparking Creativity

The first concept that struck me in this interview was when Cuero brought up universal consciousness. He notes that you need to be aware of yourself, of your own nature, and of those around you. By doing this, any local judgement you have about a society or culture is taken out. This can easily be applied to everyday life through interactions with others, especially if you find yourself in a new setting or environment. Being universally conscious allows you to eliminate any expectations or prejudice you may have, and you are, in a sense, a more open-minded person. This could even help with jobs and interviews a little later in life. Another concept Cuero touched on was the changing of expectations. At first I was unsure of how this would play into everyday life, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized school and work could be effected by this. Flipbook

My flip book is based off of the novel  To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. All the images are metaphorical to what happens in the story; for instance, the handcuffs being connected to the briefcase is representative of Atticus Finch's connection to the case of Tom Robinson and vice versa. Though the drawings are not very complex, the hardest part of making the flip book was the drawing. I had to do it backwards so I could trace the images since I can't draw the same thing twice, let alone repeatedly, so thinking about the story backwards proved to be a little challenging. Using the window to trace also wasn't too fun; the way I had to sit to do it didn't exactly agree with my back, and my hand got tired pretty quickly. It was shaking by the time I finished a section! I think by now I can say that I'm glad I'm not an animation major. Anyway, enjoy!

Video Art

Apparently I have an ongoing nature theme for all of my projects for this particular class because, for my video art project, I again decided to draw from the natural world around me. This time, however, I did actually take inspiration from Pipilotti Rist. Her visual art is absolutely stunning to me and I loved how she had incorporated the use of flowers in one of her video art pieces. She also put good use to layering, and I really wanted to try to do that for my video art piece, so I went out and shot a bunch of different videos of the plants and trees in the park, got a shot of the sky, and also one of the river as well as two of me walking down the sidewalk and through the grass. I imported my footage into Premiere and organized it so I could layer certain videos over each other; most of it was playing around with the opacity of each video.
